This medication is used to treat outbreaks caused by an infection called herpes simplex. It works by reducing the amount of virus that causes outbreaks. This medication is also used to prevent symptoms from developing. See also Warning section.
This medication is also used to treat symptoms of cold sores (herpes labialis). Talk with your doctor for more and take precautions. This medication may cause a bluish tingle; see also Warning section.
Stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
